A short time later, they were allowed into the room where Dominic had been seen by his doctor. He smiled when they entered. “I thought I’d add a little excitement to the day.”

“Are you all right?” Marta asked, resisting the urge to rush to his side and take his hand.

“I’m fine. Just a reaction to the disease and the treatments. I guess I need more rest than I realized.”

“No surprise there,” Paul said. “You never listen to anyone when they try to tell you what to do, even your doctors.”

Marta knew that wasn’t true, but she didn’t argue. Dominic could not have accomplished all he had if he hadn’t taken the advice of Sally or Father Sebastian, but she supposed that siblings always saw each other differently than the rest of the world did.

“When can you go home?” Paul asked.

“As soon as the doctor signs off. Like I said, I’m fine. No need to worry.”

This was the Dominic she knew, the man she’d seen glimpses of back then—the one who trusted in the future, not the one who scowled and barked orders and acted like he was angry with the world. Dominic was a different man with her, and she knew it. He opened up to her, allowed her to see his vulnerable yet hopeful side, and made her feel like the world was theirs. She suspected it was the man the boys at the center saw as well. These days, that might be the man he showed to the world. She honestly couldn’t say yet.

While they waited for Dominic to be released, the three of them reminisced about the past, and Marta remembered how easily she had fallen into friendship with them and with their cousin.

“Where is Angela now? I’d love to see her.”

Paul and Dominic exchanged a look, and Marta felt her blood grow cold.

Paul answered, “Angela and William got married and had kids. They moved to New York when William got a job working at Morgan Stanley—an investment firm in the city. When the kids went to school, Angela took a job as a receptionist at one of the businesses at the top of One World Trade Center.”

The room grew quiet. Marta knew the rest of the story without Paul needing to recount it. Tears sprang to her eyes. “Was she... Did they?”

Paul shook his head. “Her name’s engraved on the Memorial. That’s about all that remains.”

Marta thought about the vibrant young woman with the bright red lipstick and infectious laugh. She could play a mean game of tennis, and she loved to roller skate and go to the movies and craved adventure. It didn’t feel real to think that she was gone, her life taken in an instant. Marta sniffled and rubbed the back of her hand across her cheek to wipe away a tear.

“But she got to marry William,” she said quietly. “Her family accepted him?”

“Eventually,” Paul said. “He had to prove himself, but he did.”

Marta looked over at Dominic, recalling how he told her how he proved himself to Zia Isabella only to discover that Marta had married someone else.
